Upcoming OPUS Event

Join us in Paris or online on July 9-10, 2025, for the OPUS Final Conference. This event marks a significant milestone in transforming research assessment by promoting Open Science practices.

Explore new metrics and real-world pilot implementations that incentivize Open Science, Generic Researcher Assessment Framework (RAF). Discover an evaluation system for researchers focusing on Open Science contributions, Pilot Program Insights. Hear from research institutions about their experiences in piloting research assessment reforms.

Ideal for policymakers, researchers, and institutional leaders seeking to shape the future of research assessment.

Recent OPUS Activities

In 2025, the OPUS team will finalise OS-CAM2 and the Researcher Assessment Framework (RAF) based on feedback from the pilot phase. As part of its stakeholder engagement efforts, OPUS will broaden consultations with research-performing organisations (RPOs), research-funding organisations (RFOs), and research institutions. The final stage will focus on policy advocacy, presenting findings to EU policymakers, including the European Commission and CoARA, to integrate Open Science incentives into mainstream research assessment frameworks.

Launched on 1 September 2022 and concluding on 31 August 2025, OPUS brings together stakeholders from academia, funding bodies, and industry to establish systemic incentives that encourage transparency, collaboration, and accessibility in research.

OPUS is more than just a project - it’s a movement inviting researchers, institutions, and policymakers to join in shaping the future of Open Science. Get involved by exploring resources such as the RAF draft and policy briefs at opusproject.eu, participating in events that present pilot results and support the development of OS-CAM2, and attending the Final OPUS Conference in July 2025. Together, we can create a research ecosystem where openness drives excellence.

Latest Updates and Event Announcements

This month brings exciting opportunities and developments in the Open Science community!

Register for two insightful events advancing research excellence and data interoperability. On April 10, 2025, discover how Lancaster University strategically uses Altmetric to amplify research impact beyond traditional metrics in a webinar from the Research Impact User Stories series. Then, on May 7, 2025, explore the evolving journey toward FAIR mappings with FAIR-IMPACT’s final workshop series announcement, highlighting practical frameworks and solutions for sustainable, interoperable data practices.

Scroll down to learn more about these transformative initiatives and events!

Lancaster University is taking a strategic approach to research impact by leveraging Altmetric Explorer, a powerful tool that tracks the broader influence of academic work beyond traditional citation metrics. As part of the Research Impact User Stories series, this upcoming webinar will provide insights into how the university integrates Altmetric into its research ecosystem to enhance reporting, engagement, and real-world impact.

FAIR-IMPACT continues its efforts to enhance data interoperability by refining strategies for making mappings and crosswalks FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). As part of this initiative, the final workshop in the series will take place on 7 May 2025, focusing on the latest version of the practical mapping framework and addressing key challenges such as sustainability and governance.

Open and Universal Science Project

The OPUS project is an EU-funded project implemented by an eighteen-organisations consortium led by The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN). The project commenced on 1 September 2022 with an implementation period of 36 months.

OPUS helps reform the assessment of research towards a system that incentivises and rewards researchers to take up Open Science (OS) practices of providing open access to research outputs, early and open sharing of research, participation in open peer-review, measures to ensure reproducibility of results, and involving all stakeholders in co-creation.

OS Ecosystem State-of-the-Art

OPUS conducted a comprehensive state-of-the-art on existing literature and initiatives for Open Science to reform research(er) assessment and incentivise and reward Open Science practices. It includes a stakeholder engagement plan

OS Interventions

OPUS developed indicators and interventions for Research Performing Organisations (RPOs) and Research Funding Organisations (RFOs) to implement a reformed research(er) assessment system that incentivises and rewards Open Science.

Pilots to Implement and Monitor Open Science

OPUS sets up, implements, and monitors the pilots’ open science practices in 3 RPOs and 2 RFOs, and conducts mutual learning exercises based on implementing the action plans.

Policy Brief

OPUS will develop and disseminate policy briefs on Open Science and a revised OS-CAM to assess research careers. The policy briefs will summarise the key findings of the project and link to the wider global context of Open Science.

HORIZON-WIDERA-2021-ERA-01
